Paper bags are the unsung backbone of restaurant takeout — every order leaves the building in one, and the right bag for the use case affects customer experience as much as the food itself. This guide covers the three main foodservice paper bag categories (SOS, twisted-handle, liquor) and when to use each.
The three foodservice paper bag categories
| Format | Has handles? | Use case | Common sizes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOS (Self-Opening Sack) | No | Counter takeout (customer walks under 10 feet) | #4, #6, #8, #12, #20 |
| Twisted-handle | Yes (paper rope) | Delivery, catering, retail boutique | 8×4×10, 10×5×13, 13×7×17 |
| Liquor bag | No (reinforced base) | Retail bottle takeout (wine, spirits, beer) | Fifth (750ml), Handle (1.75L), Six-pack |
SOS bags — the counter takeout default
SOS = Self-Opening Sack. The bag has a square bottom that pops open into shape on its own when filled. SOS is the dominant takeout-bag format because it stands upright on the counter while orders are packed, and packing speed matters at peak hours.

SOS Paper Bags
9 SKUs · from $14.54 – $19.71 per case
SOS sizing system:
| Bag size | Capacity | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| #4 | 1 sandwich | Bakery items, single sandwich |
| #6 | Lunch combo | Most common quick-service takeout |
| #8 | Multi-item lunch | Sandwich + side + drink |
| #12 | Hearty dinner | Family-meal takeout, multiple entrées |
| #20 | Bulk / grocery | Catering pickup, retail produce |
SOS material variants:
- Natural kraft (brown) — lowest cost, eco-positioned, recyclable + compostable
- Bleached white — premium aesthetic, slightly higher cost
- Recycled-content kraft — 30–100% post-consumer fiber, eco-positioning premium
Twisted-handle bags — delivery and catering

Twisted Handle Bags
3 SKUs · from $26.98 – $27.48 per case
Twisted-handle bags have rope-style paper handles attached for customer carrying comfort. They’re the standard for delivery, catering pickup, and any restaurant operation where the customer transports the order more than a few steps. The visual upgrade over SOS is significant — twisted-handle bags signal a premium experience.
When to use twisted-handle:
- Delivery driver hands bag to customer at the door
- Catering order with multiple items (use double-wall variant)
- Retail / boutique branding moment
- Outdoor pickup where customer carries to vehicle
When NOT to use twisted-handle:
- Counter takeout where customer walks 5 feet (handles add cost without benefit)
- Greasy hot food (grease seepage weakens handle attachment — use SOS or poly-lined)
- Very small single-item orders (oversize bag looks sloppy)
Strength rating: Modern twisted-handle bags are reinforced where the handle attaches to the bag wall — they hold 15–20 lb of takeout food without tearing. For very heavy orders, use double-wall or two single bags.
Liquor bags — retail bottle takeout

Liquor Bags
5 SKUs · from $4.16 – $16.33 per case
Liquor bags are reinforced kraft paper bags sized specifically for retail bottle takeout — wine, spirits, craft beer six-packs, growlers. The aspect ratio (tall and narrow with reinforced base) handles a glass bottle without tearing.
Standard sizes:
- Fifth bag (4.5” × 2.75” × 12”) — 750ml bottle, standard wine/spirits
- Handle bag (6” × 3.5” × 16”) — 1.75L bottle, large spirits
- Six-pack bag (5.5” × 3.5” × 11”) — craft beer six-pack or growler
Note: liquor bag regulations vary by state. Some jurisdictions REQUIRE plain (unprinted) liquor bags at point of sale; others allow branded bags. Check local rules before custom-printing.
Material and sustainability decisions
Paper bags are inherently the eco-friendliest takeout option — natural kraft is recyclable, compostable, and renewable. Three sustainability levers:
Recycled content. 30–100% post-consumer recycled fiber is increasingly available at parity or small premium to virgin kraft. Look for FSC certification on virgin-fiber portions.
Coating-free. Many “grease-resistant” paper products historically used PFAS for moisture/grease resistance. PFAS is now banned on foodservice packaging in 10+ states. Look for PFAS-free certified bags if you need grease resistance — see our PFAS bans guide.
Compostability. Plain uncoated kraft with food-safe starch adhesive is fully compostable. PFAS-free clay-coated paper is also compostable. PE-coated paper (sometimes used for moisture resistance) is NOT compostable.
Custom printing economics
Custom-printed bags are one of the lowest-cost-per-impression branding investments a restaurant makes. A logo printed on a kraft bag delivers brand exposure every time the customer carries the bag — through office hallways, on city sidewalks, into homes.
| Print spec | MOQ | Lead time |
|---|---|---|
| 1-color flexo on kraft | ~25,000–50,000 units | 6–8 weeks |
| 2-color flexo on kraft | ~50,000 units | 6–8 weeks |
| 4-color process | ~100,000+ units | 8–10 weeks |
| Digital print (smaller MOQ) | 5,000–10,000 units | 3–4 weeks (premium per unit) |
For most restaurants, custom printing makes economic sense at 100,000+ annual bag volume — roughly 275 orders per day. Below that, generic kraft (sometimes with a sticker on each bag for branding) is more cost-effective.
