Whether a takeout container can go in the microwave comes down to the material, not the brand or the shape. PP and MFPP: yes. PET: no. Foam (EPS): no. Aluminum: conditionally, and practically no in a consumer microwave. Bagasse: yes, for short reheats. PLA: no.
That is the whole answer for the customer asking at the counter. The rest of this guide is for the operator deciding what to stock, because “can you microwave that” is the single most common question this category of packaging generates, and the container you hand out answers it before your staff can. If half your orders get reheated at home or at a desk, the material decision is a customer-experience decision.
Master spec table
Temperatures are ranges because heat tolerance varies by gauge, mold, and manufacturer. When a spec sheet for a specific product says something narrower, believe the spec sheet.

PP: the microwave-safe default
Polypropylene is the resin the microwave-safe takeout world is built on. It tolerates continuous temperatures up to roughly 230°F, and a typical microwave brings watery food to about 212°F, so there is real headroom for normal reheating. Its melt point sits far higher, at 320-340°F.
The one honest caveat: fat. Oils and greasy foods keep climbing past water’s boiling point in a microwave, and a pool of hot fat against the container wall can create a localized hot spot that distorts PP even though the rest of the container is fine. A saucy pasta reheats without drama. A container with a quarter inch of standing grease can pucker at the fat line. That is a food problem, not a resin defect, and every plastic on this list handles it worse than PP does.

MFPP: PP with minerals, same verdict
MFPP is polypropylene blended with mineral filler, typically calcium carbonate or talc at up to 40-50 percent of the material. The mineral content displaces petroleum resin and improves heat behavior; manufacturer heat ratings commonly land between 185°F and 250°F depending on the specific product, and MFPP hinged containers are routinely rated microwave-safe for short reheats of about 2 minutes.
For a buyer, the practical read is: MFPP inherits PP’s microwave verdict. It is the opaque, matte-finish hinged container you see in Asian takeout and hot-entree programs, and reheatability is a core reason it took that niche. PET: cold display only, no exceptions
PET is the crystal-clear resin in cold cups, salad clamshells, and grab-and-go display packaging, and it is a hard no in the microwave. Standard PET softens in the range of roughly 140-160°F. Reheated food blows past that in seconds, the polymer goes rubbery, and the container warps, shrinks, or folds in on itself, usually with the food still in it. Heating PET is also associated with increased leaching of antimony, a catalyst used in PET production.
None of that makes PET a bad material. It makes it a cold material. Nothing else at its price gives you glass-like clarity for salads, parfaits, and cold display, which is why our PET clamshells and PET cold cups exist in the catalog as cold-chain packaging. The rule to give staff is one sentence: if it is crystal clear and crinkles like a water bottle, it does not go in the microwave. Foam (EPS): a serving box, not cookware
Expanded polystyrene is about 95 percent air. In a microwave, the trapped air expands while the polystyrene matrix softens, and the container warps, bubbles, and can fail completely, sometimes fast enough to dump hot food. Heat also accelerates styrene migration into food, and the effect is strongest with fatty foods like meat and cheese. Unless a specific foam container carries a microwave-safe label (most foodservice foam does not), the answer is no.
Foam still wins on insulation and cost where it remains legal, but several states have now banned EPS foodservice packaging outright, so many operators are already migrating. If you are switching anyway, moving reheat-prone menu items to PP rather than to another cold-only material solves the microwave question in the same purchase order.
Aluminum: the conditional case, explained honestly
Aluminum does not melt in a microwave (its melt point is far beyond anything a kitchen produces), and regulator guidance does permit limited foil use: USDA’s microwave guidance allows small amounts of new, smooth foil to shield parts of food, kept away from the oven walls, because wrinkled foil and sharp edges concentrate the field and cause arcing, the sparking that scares customers and can damage a magnetron.
A full aluminum takeout pan is a different situation from a shielding patch. The metal body blocks microwave energy from every side except the open top, so food heats slowly and unevenly, and a crimped or torn rim is exactly the kind of edge that arcs. European aluminum trade groups have published test results showing smoothwall foil trays heating safely under controlled conditions, but you cannot control the customer’s microwave, their pan placement, or the crumpled corner of a used lid. The customer-facing answer should be: transfer the food, or use the oven.
The oven is the point. Aluminum is the only common takeout format that goes straight into a conventional or convection oven, which is why it owns catering, church suppers, and reheat-at-350 instructions. Our foil uses guide covers the broader hot-food role.
Bagasse and PLA: one yes, one no
Bagasse (molded sugarcane fiber) is microwave-safe for short reheats. Well-made fiber tolerates roughly 250-400°F depending on thickness and molding, and manufacturers typically rate it for 2-3 minutes. Long runs dry and weaken the fiber, and heavy-oil foods can scorch the surface. For the standard leftover reheat it does the job.
Standard PLA is the lowest-heat material in foodservice, deforming above roughly 110-130°F. A hot car in a Georgia summer can be enough; a microwave certainly is. Crystallized CPLA raises tolerance to roughly 185-200°F, which is why CPLA shows up as cutlery and hot-cup lids, but clear PLA cold cups and containers are strictly cold-side.
What this means for your container program
If reheating is part of how your food gets eaten, build the program around PP.
